Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf is a golf-simulation game developed by Sculptured Software, and published by Accolade in 1988.
The game features a miss-mash of eighteen holes from renowned golf courses throughout the globe ranging from the United States, Scotland, and England.
4 of the holes included in the overall 18 are from Augusta National Golf Club, 3 are from Pebble Beach Golf Links, 3 from the Old Course at St Andrews, 2 from the Riviera Country Club, 2 from Baltusrol Golf Club, 1 from Oakmont Country Club, 1 from Merion Golf Club, 1 from Muirfield, and 1 from Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.. And there you go, a complete fantasy 18 hole golf course, NES style!. In addition, the game contains simulations of two fictional complete Nicklaus-designed 18-hole courses. The Castle Pines Golf Club and The Golf Club at Desert Mountain. When each hole begins, you are taken to a small map of the current course, as well as being provided with the distance and par information. This map screen is very good for analyzing the course so you know what to expect, and which direction your shot should be, but it automatically takes you to start of the hole within 4 seconds, giving you hardly any time to look at anything! The standard stroke during a hole is decent enough. You are provided with the standard choice of clubs, and they can also give you the average distance of each club, which is a pretty neat feature for such an early golf game. You are also given a wind gauge so that you can determine which way your ball will sway after hitting it. A little bar at the top of the screen will show you which direction you will be hitting, and a bar at the side provides you with an example of how much power you'll let out while you swing. In the very center of the screen, you face the back of your golfer, waiting and ready to swing. When you've got your ball on the green, it's a different ball game altogether, the controls for this, well lets face it, quite important part of the game of golf, are difficult to say the least, as its quite tricky to even face your golfer in the correct direction for the put!. And the Verdict is...
The standard strokes are decent to play, but the putting does let the game down somewhat. The graphics are average but considering the actual loading time between each hole is around 10 seconds, you'd expect them to be slightly better. Overall its not a bad game for an early golf effort, just a few glitches let it down!. Golf fans, go for it. Everyone else, move along. |
