Digger T. Rock The Legend of the Lost City is an NES game developed by Rare and released by Milton Bradley in December 1990
You play the game in control of the title character (Digger), who is exploring caverns for hidden treasure an ultimately the titular Lost City.
The game is divided into 8 caverns, which must be explored while avoiding death from enemy attacks, cave-in's, and fatal falls. Digger has multiple tools, such as ladders and explosives, which are found and can be used to explore and uncover new areas. Monsters such as moles, mosquitoes, and later dragons seek to kill the protagonist. You start the game with three lives. The goal in each cavern is to locate both the end of level door, and the special pillar which unlocks it. When stepped on, the pillar activates a countdown timer, during which the door is open. You then race past obstacles to the door before the timer ends and the door re-closes. There is a simple bonus game in between levels where you can amass more treasure. Later levels include caveman villages where you can purchase tools with collected treasure. With enough treasure, an infinite supply of tools can be obtained. The game is notable for the animation of the character's death, which shows a presumably time-lapse view of his body decaying with only his helmet and skeleton remaining. Uuugh!. The game ends on a cliffhanger, but a sequel was for whatever reason never produced? And the Verdict is...
This game is utter genius!. The way the developers seamlessly integrated the Boulderdash concept into a platform game, coupled with the endearing, cartoon appearance of the visuals and awesome music all melds together to produce one of Rare's best NES titles. A masterpiece and a must play!. |
