Galaxy 5000 Racing in the 51st Century is a racing video game developed by Activision for the Nintendo Entertainment System and was released in 1991.
The game takes place in the future using an outer space atmosphere. It features the racing of futuristic craft that can battle each other for the top spot in the race. Each craft is also upgradeable and with each upgrade comes better shielding and weapons.
Its one of the first 3D racing game i have memory of, i remember being impressed by the graphics at that time, the courses are completely in 3D though the camera is third person a little above the course. you shoot other ships with a small gun in front of your own ship,, you can repair the damage taken after a race spending the credits you have won in the race. The courses have all kind of obstacles, from barriers that appear periodically from the ground, spikes, holes and other weapons, and are varied as there are planets in the solar system, yes you could race on every planet beginning from mercury and the final stage was the x-planet, this one being the toughest. This is a great little game, it felt so far ahead of its time back in the day, i remember it being one of my favorite NES games, it's fun, it's got amazing 8-Bit graphics for its time and was innovative, paving the way for many great racing games to follow. Great game!. A must try. |
