Goal! is a football video game published by Jaleco for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was released in Erope in 1989.
The game supports up to 2 players and has four game modes: World Cup, Tournament, Shoot Competition, and Vs. Mode. The object of the game is self explanatory - the same as in real football - one team must score more goals than the other to win.
Goal! was the first football game for consoles that achieved critical and commercial recognition. Although still far more simplistic than other footy games of its time, Goal! was able to distinguish itself mainly because of lack of competition, although the game is fairly good, and definitely better than Soccer, the other prominent soccer game for the NES. The graphics are competent. During the game, visuals are basic, though players are better drawn than most other football games of the time, having a more realistic design. The teams have 11 players, which was also uncommon for console footy games, as they generally reduced the number of players on the field. And the Verdict is...
Overall this is not a bad footy game for its time, and probably the first one that really showed that consoles could offer quality similar to computers. Although still very basic, the game tries to offer a more realistic option with its angled slightly 3D perspective, although there is a lack of deepness, such as technical decisions and different kinds of play. Not a bad effort of a decent footy game for the time.. However, this is not the best football game for the NES, that title goes to Nintendo World Cup. |
