Double Dribble created by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System was released in 1987. It was originally an arcade game. It proved to be extremely popular, and was a good representation of actual basketball.
As sports games go, this one is quite good, it follows the rules of the game, the controls are responsive and the play-ability of the game is very engaging, but like all other sports games of this time it had its flaws. Several positions on the court were 'hot spots,' high-percentage areas where shots taken were likely to score points. For instance, it is easier to hit a 3-pointer on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. You could start a 3-point jump shot from the top right or left corner of the court in-bounds, and continue the jump out of bounds and even slightly behind the hoop and it would go in nearly every time.
So even though this game was created by Konami, like most of Nintendo's sports games, the game is pretty simple. All you do is dribble the ball and try to shoot it into the hoop on the other side of the field - There are no special gimmicks. Unfortunately, this is both a blessing and a curse, as while the game is fairly easy to play, it gets boring very quickly, especially as there are only 3 teams to play with! And the Verdict is...
Overall, its not a bad game, but it could have been a lot lot better just with a few little tweeks. The only fun to be had here is on 2 player mode, taking a trip down memory lane with friends if you were in to it back in the day, its worth a play for nostalgia purposes. If your planning on playing this alone, don't bother!. The lack of any tournaments whatsoever kills the play time to the ground!. |
